Paper Moons and Canvas Skies

People always think I’m dazed and distracted, and I can’t blame them.  Most of the time, i wander around the corridors of silliman university barely aware of my surroundings, and deeply lost in thought.  I day dream a lot.  Day dreaming has been a very interesting pastime and it has been one of the queerest, according to some of my close friends.

Call me a female Peter Pan.  i don’t want to grow up.  I want to be lost deep within the bowels of my imagination and i long for adventures that are just so farfetched from reality.  I want to soar the skies upon a dragon’s back, sail tot he sunset on a hundred-mast ship, barely escape the clutches of a terrible magician, and feel the strong companionship of a travelling band of people and creatures.

My world is one hell of a make-believe paradise where things aren’t always what they seem.  It’s where the CBA pond becomes the portal to an unknown ocean paradise where golden kelps sway to the rhythm of the current.  It’s where the Hibbard Hall hides a secret compartment leading to a fascinating museum of winged horses and fur-covered snakes.

So, here’s a little song i’d like to share with you–one that reflects the way i think, one that never fails to make me smile.  It’s called ‘Paper Moon’ as interpreted by Natalie Cole.

I never feel a thing is real,
When I’m away from you.
Out of your embrace,
The world’s a temporary parking place.

Mmm, mm, mm, mm…
A bubble for a minute.
Mmm, mm, mm, mm…
You smile, the bubble has a rainbow in it.

Say it’s only a paper moon,
Sailing over a cardboard sea.
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Yes, it’s only a canvas sky,
Hanging over a muslin tree.
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me.

Without your love,
It’s a honky-tonk parade.
Without your love,
It’s a melody played in a penny arcade.

It’s a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me.
